Sitting Desk vs Standing Desk

Well if you follow Apple then you might have come across articles where CEO Tim Cook shared that in the new Apple Park, all employees will have a standing desk. This thought inclines us to believe that great health benefits await us when we use a standing desk. But is it really the case?

Let us track this from the beginning. A standing desk is a desk that allows you to work comfortably while standing up. It is available in various types and designs. Some are height adjustable while others are fixed. Now, let’s move on to the health aspect.

1. What sitting desk does to your body.

While sitting, we burn fewer calories than standing or walking. Research indicates that sitting for long periods can have drastic negative effects on the body. They include obesity and a host of other harmful conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels — all these makeup metabolic syndromes. Too much sitting overall and prolonged periods of sitting also seem to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

2. How standing desk can improve on the above

Research indicates that standing burns more calories than sitting. In some cases, subjects did shed some pounds off their belly. Some of the commonly known benefits are:

  • Lowers chance of obesity and weight gain
  • May lower blood sugar level
  • Drastically reduce the chance of heart failure
  • Reduce back pain
  • Induces positive mood and energy
  • May even boost productivity

3. Best of both worlds

Although the standing desk has a lot of benefits, there are drawbacks with standing for prolonged periods such as joint and knee pain. The work should consist of a combination of standing and sitting desk time. A height adjustable desk can be used for the purpose. Experts have stated a 3:1 standing/sitting ratio to reap maximum health benefits.
